At Console & Associates, our data breach lawyers are closely examining the recent Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (“MetLife”) data breach. This data breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident at MetLife, which may have affected an undetermined number of individuals, potentially exposing sensitive personal identifiable information.

What Happened?

A recent report from the Attorney General of Montana states that the MetLife data breach occurred due to a cyber security attack that was discovered in July 2024 after the company a service provider informed MetLife that on February 22, 2024 an unauthorized party accessed the provider’s IT network. The service provider launched an investigation that confirmed the unauthorized access to confidential MetLife customer information. MetLife reviewed the files to determine which consumers were impacted and what information was compromised. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include:

  • names,
  • dates of birth,
  • policy numbers
  • and Social Security numbers

Data breach letters were sent out by MetLife on August 28, 2024 informing affected individuals about the nature of the incident and compromised data.
