A misconfiguration in two Google Groups controlled by BuzzFeed exposed Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, and other sensitive records to unauthorized viewing. What Happened?According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts AG Office, BuzzFeed was affected by a data security event involving two company controlled Google Groups. The misconfiguration, which allowed unauthorized viewing of sensitive data, was reported to BuzzFeed on August 19, 2026. Information exposed in the breach reportedly included full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, driver's license or passport numbers, telephone numbers, email addresses, and physical addresses. Proper security over the Google Groups was implemented by August 20, 2026. Affected individuals were notified by mail beginning September 14, 2026.
