At Console & Associates, our data breach lawyers are closely examining the recent UNOS data breach. This breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident, which may have affected as many as 1.5 million individuals, potentially exposing sensitive personal information.
A recent report states that UNOS was compromised due to a cyber security attack that was discovered on December 14, 2023 when the company posted a notice on its website indicating that the company was “investigating a configuration error that may have permitted access by authorized users to some patients’ personal health information stored within two UNOS IT environments.” UNOS confirmed that certain patient information was available to others in the organ transplant community and the sensitive information was not kept secure, which exposed the data to unauthorized access. Data breach letters will need to be sent out by UNOS informing affected individuals about the nature of the incident and compromised data.
The United Network for Organ Sharing is a private, non-profit organization based in Richmond, Virginia. They are the sole government contractor that manages the nation's organ transplant system. Part of UNOS’ responsibilities include managing the national transplant waiting list.
