At Console & Associates, our data breach lawyers are closely examining the recent UNITE HERE data breach. This breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident, which may have affected as many as 790,273 individuals, potentially exposing sensitive personal information.
A recent report from the Attorney General of Maine states that the UNITE HERE was compromised due to a cyber security attack when an unauthorized party gained access to parts of their computer system on October 20, 2023. This prompted the company to take steps to secure their systems and launch an investigation. It was confirmed that confidential data belonging to members and staff of certain UNITE HERE local unions, health funds, and the San Diego UNITE HERE Pension Fund was accessed without authorization. UNITE HERE handles employment, health, welfare, and pension data on behalf of these affiliated organizations. Data breach letters were sent out by UNITE HERE on February 23, 2024 informing affected individuals about the nature of the incident and compromised data.
Headquartered in New York City, UNITE HERE is a 300,000+ member labor union representing workers across the United States and Canada. The industries where their members work include hospitality, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textiles, distribution, laundry, transportation, and airports. With members spanning two countries, UNITE HERE advocates on behalf of workers in some of the fastest growing sectors of the North American economy. Through organizing and collective bargaining, they aim to give workers in these industries a voice to improve wages and working conditions.
