This data breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident at St. Joseph's College of Maine, which may have affected as many as 126,000 individuals, potentially exposing sensitive personal identifiable information.

What Happened?

A recent report from the California Attorney General's website states that the St. Joseph's College of Maine data breach occurred due to unauthorized access to the college's IT network.

The college discovered that an unauthorized party had infiltrated their computer systems, gaining access to their network between December 15, 2023, and January 24, 2024. During this extended period of unauthorized access, the intruder had the opportunity to access and potentially exfiltrate files containing confidential consumer information.

Upon discovering the breach, St. Joseph's College of Maine took containment measures, reported the incident to federal law enforcement authorities, and initiated a thorough investigation with assistance from external cybersecurity specialists. After completing their review of compromised files on February 20, 2025, the college identified which individuals were affected and what information had been exposed.

While specific data types compromised haven't been publicly disclosed in the California AG filing, the personalized data breach notification letters sent to affected individuals on March 21, 2025 should contain detailed information about the specific personal data that was compromised in each case.
