What Happened?

A recent report from the Securities and Exchange Commission states that the Microchip Technology data breach occurred due to a cyber security attack that was discovered on August 17, 2024 after the company detected suspicious activity within its computer network. Microchip Technology contained the incident and launched an investigation that confirmed that an unauthorized party attempted to access their system causing disruption of its network operations. It was also determined that the unauthorized party obtained employee information stored on its IT systems, including employee contact information and some encrypted and hashed passwords. Microchip Technology reviewed the files to determine which consumers were impacted and what information was compromised. Data breach letters will need to be sent out by Microchip Technology informing affected individuals about the nature of the incident and compromised data if they are able to confirm the breach.
