This breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident, which may have affected as many as **21,000 individuals**, potentially exposing sensitive personal information. - names, - addresses, - medical information, - and health insurance information   ## Data Breach Incident Details A recent report from the [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights](https://ocrportal.hhs.gov/ocr/breach/breach_report.jsf) states that the McKenzie Health was compromised due to a cyber security attack on October 5, 2023. Suspicious activity was detected within an employee’s email account prompting McKenzie Health to secure their email environment and launch an investigation. The investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access the employee’s email account between October 2, 2023 and October 4, 2023. The unauthorized party also obtained access to confidential patient information stored in various emails and attachments. Data breach letters were sent out by McKenzie Health on February 13, 2024 informing affected individuals about the nature of the incident and compromised data.   ## McKenzie Health Overview Headquartered in Watford City, North Dakota, McKenzie County Healthcare System, Inc. is a healthcare system that operates several healthcare facilities.
