At Console & Associates, our data breach lawyers are closely examining the recent Change Healthcare data breach. This breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident, which may have affected an unknown number of individuals, potentially exposing sensitive personal information.
A recent report from the HIPAA Journal states that the Change Healthcare was compromised due to a cyber security attack. On February 21, 2024, Change Healthcare discovered that an unauthorized third party had accessed parts of the company's computer network. Upon detecting the breach, Change Healthcare immediately took steps to secure the affected systems and launched an investigation that is still ongoing. Change Healthcare's parent company, UnitedHealth Group, stated that based on its initial assessment, the security incident appears to be confined to Change Healthcare's internal network and systems, and there is no evidence at this time that Optum or UnitedHealth Group systems were compromised. Data breach letters will need to be sent out by Change Healthcare if they determine consumer data was compromised to inform affected individuals about the nature of the incident and compromised data.
Change Healthcare is a Nashville, Tennessee-based company that provides healthcare information technology solutions. It operates as a subsidiary under Optum, which is a division of UnitedHealth Group Incorporated.
