This data breach was disclosed following a cyber security incident at New Era Enterprises, which may have affected certain Central States Health & Life Co. of Omaha customers, potentially exposing sensitive personal identifiable information including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, insurance ID numbers, and medical information.

What Happened?

A recent report from the Maine Attorney General's Office states that the New Era Enterprises data breach occurred due to a cyber security incident in which unauthorized access to the company's IT network was detected.

Between December 9 and December 18, 2024, an unauthorized party gained access to New Era's network systems and copied files containing confidential customer information. New Era Enterprises discovered this suspicious activity on December 18, 2024, and took action by isolating affected portions of their network infrastructure and launching a comprehensive investigation with assistance from third-party cybersecurity specialists.

The investigation revealed that the compromised data belonged to customers of Central States Health & Life Co. of Omaha (CSO), for whom New Era's subsidiary provides administrative services. After identifying the affected individuals, New Era notified CSO about the incident on February 3, 2025.

Data breach letters were sent out by New Era Enterprises on March 10, 2025, informing affected individuals about the nature of the incident and the specific types of personal information that may have been compromised in their particular case.

Steps To Take If You Were Affected By A Data Breach

  2. Consider freezing your credit
    1. Contact all three major credit bureaus to place a freeze
    2. Understand this prevents new accounts from being opened in your name
    3. Remember to temporarily lift the freeze when applying for legitimate credit

    3. Verify all communications through official channels

  4. Change passwords for affected accounts
    1. Create strong, unique passwords for each account
    2. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters
    3. Consider using a password manager for better security

  5. Enable two-factor authentication where possible
    1. Add this extra layer of security to all important accounts
    2. Use authenticator apps rather than SMS when available
