Based on a report filed with the Maine Attorney General's office, BBS Financial experienced a ransomware attack that compromised their systems. The incident, discovered on January 29, 2024, resulted in unauthorized actors gaining access to and extracting confidential data from the company's networks. The cybercriminals responsible for the attack demanded a ransom payment in exchange for deleting the stolen information. While BBS Financial ultimately made the payment and received confirmation of data deletion, the company cannot guarantee that the information wasn't copied or misused prior to its removal.
